We’ve got up at 6.45 am and had a quick breakfast. As we arrived really close to our pick up point yesterday, we’ve only driven 5mins to Lang Bay Store where dropped off the car and paid for 4 full days of parking. At 8.00 am sharp, we got picked up by Jesse from Sunshine Coast Shuttle Services who got us all to Inland Lake Campground.
During the drive towards the campground, one interesting thing has been Jesse reporting our progress toward the destination using a radio as there was active logging going on. Once we've arrived, we double-checked we have everything ready and said goodbye to our driver who wished us good luck. The journey can begin.
We have been following path along the Inland Lake for about an hour and slowly started ascending towards Confederation Lake. We have climbed about 600 meters of elevation before finally arriving to the lake around lunch time. There has been no one around so we've had the whole place for ourselves. Perfect weather for a swim, so before grabbing a bite, we've checked out the lake and it was great!
We've cooked a lunch after we refreshed ourselves in the lake and still went for another dip afterwards. There’s a hut right next to the lake to stay overnight (at least 8-10 people can easily sleep upstairs), but as we've set a target for a different one, we’ve continued further at about 2 pm.
Our next stop has been a crossing leading to Fiddle Hat which took us about 2-3 hours of walking with little to no stops. Here we’ve decided to grab water nearby and continue all the way to Tin Hut (we've had an option to go to Fiddle and stay overnight, but we would miss the sunrise which was supposed to be great at Tin Hut).
This looked like a good idea until we've set our feet on yet another elevation of almost 900 meters. The last part felt like it never ends and the elevetion has been really not forgiving. Eventually, we've made it all the way to the top, even though we have missed the sunset by about 15-20 minutes - one more reason to get up early to watch the sunrise.
Overall, we’ve completed over 1600m of elevation in total and hiked almost 30 kilometers in under 9 hours fully packed. This has been probably one of the longest hikes I've ever done while carrying all the gear for camping and cooking - really great challenge and experience.
We’ve had a quick dinner in the dark and went to sleep in the hut, which haven’t been as busy as we thought, we were pretty tired after all. It was just us and three other people sleeping up there that night, most of the others set up tents and camped nearby.
