I have arrived to British Columbia just a few days ago and had a great opportunity to join my old-time friend Ondra for a day trip to three peaks near Squamish. I did not have any expectations except for knowing it's going to be steep.
We've left at 8.30 in the morning and we have picked up another Ondra's friend Tomas on our way to Squamish. The drive itself takes about an hour and you can park right next to the trailhead.
The first thing we have noticed is that temperature dropped a little bit. We have decided to put jackets on right away as it was really chilly. I can say some of us put some layers off very soon as the ascent has been noticeable.
The trail itself has been a mixture of wooden or stone stairs together with regular path, sometimes as steep as you had to use a help of a steel handrail or even ladder.
Hike consists of three peaks, which are accessible along the route. You can take two ways, first going straight to the last one and on your way back visit the other two. We have decided for the second option, thus starting with first peak, continuing to the second one and head for the third one in the end.
First peak is the only one you have to take a special trail to as it is not a stop on the hike itself - you have to descent back to the main route once you have visited the top. Some hikers decide to skip the first one but I think it's worth seeing the views from all of them.
For the almost middle of November, we were very lucky with the weather as not a single raindrop fell down from the sky. Also, the traffic on the route has not been as crazy as it would be in summer months.
Sometimes mountains surrounded with ocean water reminded me of Norway fjords. On the way to other two peaks, we have had a chance to see some very nice sceneries and not surprisingly also couple of squirells.
This hidden view of mountain in the back of the picture opened very suddenly as we progressed along the route. I would not be able to spot without the notice of my friends.
I would say we have arrived at the top of the mountain shortly after 12.00 PM and have decided to eat lunch. We have spent at the top about thirty minutes and then decided to head slowly back down, using the other route right to the parking lot. The descent itself was much faster than we have expected and we were going down approximately for about an hour.
Once we were in the car, we have decided to have a quick stop at Levette Lake, which I would describe as a hidden gem a few kilometers from Squamish. It is serviced by a gravel road which took us right to the lake. Thanks to the road work done earlier this year, we had no troubles going up.
Once we have returned to the car, it started to get dark a little bit and it was time to get back to Vancouver. I can say it was a great opportunity to join Ondra and his friend for an interesting trip to one of the peaks in Vancouver proximity.
